North India Hill Stations |
- Manali
Situated
at the northern end of the kullu valley, Manali has spectacular
views of snowcapped peaks and wooded slopes. Manali literally
means the 'Home of Manu'. Manu is the mythological character who
is supposed to have survived when the world was drowned in
Flood. He then came to Manali and recreated human life. Thus,
the area of Manali is sacred and Hindus treat the temples over
here as pilgrimage.
- Shimla
A
quaint little hill train chugs up into the Shivalik foothills,
over dramatic loops and high arched bridges to the hill resort
of Shimla, the capital of the mountain state of Himachal
Pradesh. Shimla was one a string of hill stations that the
British established to escape from the scorching heat of the
plains.

capped mountains leave an indelible impression on one's mind. The
modern bungalows, malls and well laid gardens which are located
on the small hills around the area are enough to attract any
tourist.

splendour. A land of breathtaking beauty crowned by the majestic
Himalayas. It is one of the most magnificent hill resorts in the
world. This heavenly retreat is bathed in hues of every shade.
- Panchmari
Among
the few exceptions is Panchmarhi in Madhya Pradesh. It is not on
the usual beat of hill station buffs and therefore, thankfully,
not over-developed. Though considered the states hill
station it does not offer the predictable mountain fare of
awesome heights and spectacular scenery, for the Satpuras are
low lying weathered hills.
- Dharamsala
Dharamsala
over looks the plains and is surrounded by dense pine trees and
Deodar forests. A nearby snowline with numerous streams and cool
healthy atmosphere makes the surroundings very attractive. A
busy bazaar town, Dharamsala has established itself as the
travellers base camp, who come to explore the nearby mountains.
